Tradition of throwing confetti at weddings

Filed under: Wedding Help & Advice — admin @ 9:00 am

The tradition of throwing confetti dates back to the Pagan rite of showering the bride and groom on their wedding day to bring them prosperity and fertility.

The word  confetti is derived from the Italian word confectionary – this included grain or rice covered in sugar, which was most popularly thrown at the wedding couple during past times.  More recently, the word confetti has remained but a paper alternative has been substituted, being cheaper to purchase and can also be matched to the wedding colour scheme.

Confetti can be rather messy for the church or reception venue to clear away, so check if they allow paper confetti or rice to be thrown.  If not, bubbles are a nice alternative – they don’t leave any mess and can help make some good wedding photos.

The Card Gallery offers a wide range of wedding photo albums and guest books to suit your special occasion.

Where does the term ‘Honeymoon’ come from?

Filed under: Wedding Help & Advice — admin @ 9:00 pm

Have you ever wondered where the term honeymoon comes from?  It is believed that the term originates from the days when a man captured his bride abd they would hide away from her parents before they married.  They would hide for a cycle of the moon and drink honey wine during this time, and hence the phrase ‘honeymoon’ evolved.

Fertility was encouraged for newly weds in different ways in different parts of the world.  In Scotland a pregnant or breast-feeding lady would prepare the marital bed, believing this would bring the couple fertility.  By comparison, in Ireland, on the couples’ first night together, a hen laying eggs would be tied to the maritial bed – this together with eating a double yolked egg was believed to bring fertility.

The Card Gallery offers a range of honeymooon photo albums, many of which can be personalised, for example with the couples name and honeymoon destination.
